THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE

COMBINE A PICTURESQUE NATURAL SETTING WITH WILDLIFE AND POWERFUL 4X4S AND YOU HAVE THE MAKINGS OF AN EXHILARATING ADVENTURE

G

wahumbe Game & Spa in KwaZulu-Natal offers a thrilling 4x4 experience against the backdrop of majestic cliffs, lush riverine forests and grasslands.

The private reserve overlooks the confluence

of the Umsunduze and Gwahumbe Rivers in the greater Gwahumbe Valley and is home to hippo, giraffe, zebra, antelope and amazing birdlife. It’s also the perfect off-road destination for 4x4 enthusiasts. The Gwahumbe 4x4 trail is ideal for novice or seasoned off-road drivers. It stretches across 9km and offers different trails for varying skill levels (ranging from Grades 1-3). Drivers encounter river crossings, sandy tracks, rocky sections, steep inclines and declines, side slopes, gravel and grass, muddy sections during heavy rainfall and a few twisting climbs, which all add to the fun of the challenge. “We give roughing it a whole new meaning!” says Director Shanon MacKenzie. However, protecting the environment is also key. It’s important to balance the off-road adventure

with nature conservation, says Noel Stapelfeldt from Impilo 4x4 Driver Training, which has been providing training at Gwahumbe since 2003. “The track evolves every year. New tracks are cut out as older ones erode with changing weather conditions. We share environmental awareness with all drivers who attend our courses, ensuring they respect the terrain, other off-road users and, most importantly, the wildlife. Our motto is that animals always have the right of way.” Gwahumbe also offers excellent picnic
