TOYOTA CONNECT

T

here’s clearly much more to the Etios than meets the eye. Toyota’s entry-level vehicle, available in both hatchback and sedan,

continues to garner the attention of the young and the mobile – and it’s easy to see why. With a contemporary aesthetic and mechanics that keep going right, this fun-sized little hatchback appeals to both the family-orientated professional and the trendy socialite. It’s a formula that’s steadily improved since the car’s introduction in 2012.

OVERALL YOUTHFUL LOOK Already an appealing-looking car,

the Etios Sprint model continues to impress with a raft of improvements such as revised grille and aero

detailing. Lamp clusters also get a mild refresh. Refinement is ramped up, courtesy of further reduced noise, vibration and harshness, while exhaust silencer and suspension components are revised for maximum hush. No unforgiving or raucous drives for Etios-owners.

ENTRY-LEVEL DOESN’T

MEAN CHEAP Inside, the Etios is a pleasure to live with, thanks to a new-look instrument cluster that gives the car more upmarket appeal. On top of this, there are loads of standard features (always appreciated at this price point). These include a Bluetooth-compatible audio system with USB and CD inputs, so owners can sing their way through their Etios experience. And for relief from

sweltering South African summers, manual air-conditioning is standard too, while electric windows come as standard on the Etios Sprint.

HARDLY SHORT ON SHUNT The Etios’s four-cylinder, 1,5-litre engine

is nothing short of class-leading, mated to a five-speed manual transmission and rated at 66kW and 132Nm. More relevant than its 0-100km/h sprint times, however, is its thrifty 6l/100km combined fuel cycle. With a tank size of 45 litres, that means owners can drive 750km between fuel stops.
