With these new engines, the


company’s targeting 10% better power performance, 20% better fuel economy and up to 40% thermal efficiency, with as much as a 60% reduction in particulate emissions. And, just to confuse you further, some


of the latest mills use a combination of different cycles for even better efficiency and frugality. In essence, the four- stroke Otto-cycle (named after engineer Nikolaus Otto) ensures better power, while the Atkinson-cycle (also named after its founder, James Atkinson) enables better fuel-efficiency. Those fancy driving mode settings?


They’re there for a reason. Sport mode, for more spirited driving, gives you better throttle response, quicker gear shifts and even a stiffened-up suspension. But it won’t save you fuel. Normal Mode is for everyday driving,


while Eco Mode retards throttle reaction, cuts engine power and introduces longer gear-holding, all in an effort to make


your vehicle as fuel-efficient as possible. So, while you’re effortlessly cruising on the highway, spare a thought for those clever engineers, the army of technicians and electronic experts at Toyota who are making your driving experience more enjoyable every day.


AERODYNAMICS At this point, you’re probably


contemplating the engineering wonders under your Toyota’s metal skin, but take a moment to also consider the way it silently, purposefully scythes through the air as you drive. Without a properly designed


exterior, the wonderful mechanical tech will be wasted. Remember, the less drag, the less power it takes to push the vehicle through the air, meaning less fuel is consumed. That means aerodynamic efficiency


– or, simply put, “cheating the wind” – is a key aspect of vehicle design and


development. It incorporates natural aerodynamic “carving” and wind- cheating tricks to improve high-speed stability, “managing” the airflow around the wheels and including devices such as subtle spoilers and a flat underbody to minimise air impact. And this has to be done with


an aesthetically pleasing shape, and without compromising practicality and space. So to maximise the aerodynamic


effect, keep your windows closed while driving. Rather crank up the internal air management system – it’s been designed to channel air efficiently through the interior.
